DAN JONES TAKES CHARGE IN THE R&G ROOKIES’ TROPHY!

As the 2016 MCE British Superbike Championship heads for the penultimate round, Hel Performance British Motostar Standard Champion Dan Jones has taken a commanding lead in the R&G Rookies’ Trophy following his title winning rides at Donington Park. Jones’ double win at the weekend also saw him nominated the R&G Rookie of the Meeting by James Whitham.

The opening round of the Showdown might have seen sparks fly in the blue-riband Superbike class, but things were equally exciting throughout the support class races. Having dominated the Hel Performance British Motostar Standard class in 2016, Dan Jones cemented his position at the top of the standings with an emphatic double victory at Donington that saw him claim the 2016 title.

Following his stunning ride on Sunday which saw him win the Standard class and claim seventh overall in the race, James Whitham chose Dan to be the R&G Rookie of the Meeting too. This was Dan’s second time being nominated this season, with other Rookie of the Meeting winners including Glenn Irwin, Mason Law, Tarran Mackenzie, Bradley Ray and Ben Currie.

Despite Jones’ commanding lead, with two rounds remaining it is still all to play for in the 2016 R&G Rookies’ Trophy. KTM Cup rider Scott Swann sits second, however with no more races left this year it will be a tough ask for him to stay there. Fellow Motostar competitor Max Cook lies in third, narrowly ahead of Glenn Irwin and Bradley Ray and all three know strong rides in their final races can see them scoop the prize.

The R&G Rookies’ Trophy is open to those riders competing in their first full season in their respective class, with the overall winner at the end of the season receiving £500 cash and £1,000 worth of R&G product support for the 2017 season. Points are awarded based on the rider’s performance compared to their fellow rookies in the class, irrespective of the overall finishing position.

R&G UK Sales Manager Alan Garrett added “We’re reaching crunch time in the 2016 season, and it’s interesting to see the names now climbing the ranks in our R&G Rookies’ Trophy standings. Dan Jones had a fantastic weekend, taking the 2016 Standard Motostar title after dominating all year. He was also a deserved winner of our Rookie of the Meeting too. Whilst he enjoys a healthy lead, it’s going to be a close finish as Max, Glenn and Brad are all within striking distance so the final two rounds could be interesting!”
